Motor City Drum Ensemble Down to two last shows at XOYO, but.. we keep the good stuff coming!!

In room 1, I m delighted to welcome Andy Carthy aka Official Mr Scruff.
Andy is something of a rare breed today - striving for the perfect, making no compromises. This entails bringing his technical engineers to each gig to set up the sound system, his own visuals/preferred light, his own mixer (in this case an Isonoe) etc.. so when i say XOYO will have never sounded better than tonight, i mean it!
As much as he’s dead set on having specific things right technically, you would be surprised how open-minded he is when it comes to the music - I ve heard him play anything from HipHop, Soul 45s, Reggae, Disco, Boogie, House to Broken Beat, and he does it in style, in his own special way.. And for this fact, there are many believers out there, including myself.

In Room 2, another fine British gentleman, who likes to keep a low profile despite him being, arguably, the worlds best disco dj at the moment: Mister Red Greg.
Me and many of my peers share that sentiment -
Darren is the perfect combination of immense knowledge, razor-sharp mixing skills, and, most importantly, always having an eye for the crowd. Sometimes i feel like in the somehow a bit elitist world of record nerds, things can be a little stiff - Not so with Darren. He knows its not about rarity, but about what keeps the crowd going. And when you see him working another dance floor to the usual frenzy, you will understand why he’s regarded as THE disco dj by many at the moment.

Motor City Drum Ensemble 3 more weeks of XOYO... and some great nights still coming up!

For this next one, i invited two good friends around, HUNEE & Nick Record.

In Room 1, Hunee will surely go down down a storm. His rise to fame has been steadily over the last couple of years, and if theres one guy who deserves the hype, its him. Seamlessly jumping through genres, eras and tempos, he is one of the rare bunch of djs out there who make the most complex transitions sound like they are just naturally meant to be that way. Combine that with a lovely character, a thoughtful and inspired soul and you get something hard not to like. Very happy to have him this weekend!

Room 2 sees the return of fellow record-obsessed buddy Nick the Record. He has been Djing and dealing records since the 80s, so basically when i was still in my diapers. Whenever i go visit him in his lovely Brighton hideout, i make sure to limit time and funds, otherwise i might risk spending my pension money on records there. As a Dj, he is drawing from this massive record collection and is constantly surprising me with things i never heard of, adventurous yet still with a good eye for the crowd. Our night together at Phonox last year was very special so its great to have you back, Nick!

Demand for this was one was pretty crazy, its been the first one to sell out actually.. but there will be (very limited) tickets on the door.

Today 4-6PM BST over at Worldwide FM, i ll be hosting another State of Rhythm Session, this time around with a very special show.. As i ve been on tour with the one and only Leroy Burgess these last couple of weeks, i thought it would be great to catch up with him in between his performances and talk about music, his upbringing, the problems in modern american society and many other interesting subjects. It has become a very personal, and dare i say deep show - a beautiful, inspired soul such as leroy is a rare gift to all of us and i m sure you ll appreciate this!
There will be a lot of his own music, as well as some nice bits that seemed fitting within the context. I ll provide the mixcloud link as always a couple of days later. Thanks again also to all of the great band members, JAW Family and Lucas Vionnet for being the driving force behind the tour!

Motor City Drum Ensemble Show #7 of the Residency at Xoyo tomorrow.. Time is flying!

In room 1, I ve invited one of the most talented 'new kids on the block' from Detroit, Mister Kyle Hall. He s been delivering the goods on his Wild Oats Music Label since 2008, and released the brilliant album 'From Joy' there last year, which has been a big favorite of mine. Years ago he also remixed one of my own tunes, and i feel its been quite some time since we last shared the decks.. so I am excited to see what hes up to!

Room 2 will be in the hands of Mafalda Gil Meireles, one of the most promising new faces on the scene. Together with Sam/Floating Points she runs Melodies International, a great label focussed on bringing life to long forgotten tunes, something we both love to do.. We also share a big passion for jazz, which she demonstrated very well on her recent RA Podcast.. if you havent heard it, check it out here:

Motor City Drum Ensemble Back for another XOYO session this weekend - and we have two great italian artists over:

My guest in room 1 is the originator/pioneer of „cosmic disco“, mister Daniele Baldelli. He has been behind the turntables since 1969 (yes, thats correct!), throughout the seventies as the resident DJ of the Club Baia Degli Angeli in Rimini, and later for the mythical ‚Cosmic‘ Club. Its here that he perfected his wild mixture of soul, disco, wave, african and tribal rhythms of all sorts. He pioneered quite a couple of techniques, most famously playing records on the „wrong“ speed (on 45rpm instead of 33 and vice versa), which became a trademark of the cosmic era.
Many years later, he is still at it, touring the globe spreading the cosmic vibe.. and i m happy i get to open up for this fine gentleman!

To round things out nicely, Room 2 will be in the hands of one of the finest DJs out there - Enrico aka Volcov - Neroli. A true „Djs Dj“, it seems like everybody can agree on his skills behind the decks. Enrico is one of the rare breed of DJs who can at the same time tell a story, entertain the crowd yet still play only the tastiest of records out there. If you haven’t heard of him, i m sure you will leave the night as a believer ;)

Motor City Drum Ensemble EDIT: catch leroy burgess live on air over at Worldwide FM right now!

This friday at XOYO, its something of a dream come true for me.. New York Legend Leroy Burgess will perform LIVE on stage, backed by a full live band! For those of you who dont know him.. well, he is one of THE biggest vocalists and songwriters in soul and disco circles - his discography is mind-blowing, from his early career as part of Black Ivory, to his later projects such as Logg, Universal Robot Band, Aleem etc etc.. he wrote songs for Fonda Rae (Over like a fat rat!), Rick James and many, many others.. needless to say, this will be a VERY rare and special occasion to see one of the true heroes of soul music perform! Its the first show of his first european Tour, followed by gigs in Paris, Berlin and Lyon. Big shouts to Lucas & JAW Family for helping out to set this up!

In support of Mr Burgess, i ve got two very talented, equally soulful guests over: Legendary Amsterdam DJ KC the Funkaholic ( Kees Funkaholic Heus ) and the talented Jayda G, who is rightfully making big waves at the moment! All right, to finish in Leroy`s words..now everybody.. "Get down Friday Night" :)

Motor City Drum Ensemble In London again this Friday for this weeks residency at XOYO:

In room 1 i ve got buddy Jeremy Underground over. One of the best House DJs to come up in recent times, and a big connaisseur of all things soulful on vinyl. His selecting skillls also manifest through his My Love Is Underground label, where he has been releasing some of the finest House music of the last couple of years, and last years 'Beauty' compilation. We ve been playing together quite a bit in recent years, so this is going to be good fun i recon!

Room 2 will be in the hands of mister Rich Medina, another serious collector and a great DJ who has been at it since longer than most of us. Known for his eclectic taste (from Fela Kuti to House to Disco to Funk to HipHop...) and impeccable skills on the turntables, he ll be a perfect match for tonight!

Motor City Drum Ensemble London...Back at XOYO on Friday for my weekly residency! And i ve got two very special guests again:

First of, a London legend - Mister Gilles Peterson ! Where to start talking about Gilles? First of all, he is somewhat of a mentor to me and a lot of my peers, with his BBC Radioshow "Worldwide" educating us for countless years now. He treats music with the respect it deserves - no boundaries in genres, nothing is too far out or too popular, as long as it has soul, meaning and a cultural relevance to it. With this in mind he is largely responsible for the success of many artists, early on through his Talkin Loud' Label, while today its his Brownswood imprint that makes waves. A genuine spokesperson for our culture, never shy of asking the right questions, promoting a vision of club music that holds certain values immanent, values me and a lot of others still believe in. More power to you Gilles, and i m very happy to welcome you on my dancefloor this Friday!

In room two, i m deligthed to have another true talent over - Detroit's K-HAND. She has been releasing records since the early 90s, and many of those are pretty legendary by now. She helped shaping the House and Techno sound of her home city and for many remains one of those 'best kept secrets' around. I played one of her classic tracks at XOYO last year, 'Starz', and it blew the roof off that place ;)

See you all on friday! Presale Tickets are sold out, but theres a few remaining at the door. First come, first served..

My guest this time is nuyorican producer/DJ Darshan Jesrani, one half of the Metro Area project, whose legendary self-titled LP is getting the deluxe reissue treatment this month. Motor City Drum Ensemble After last weeks start to my residency, with a smiling Dego delivering the goods at XOYO , I ll be having these two fine gentlemen for the next one this friday:

First of, Marcellus Pittman Unirhythm, one of the nicest, warmest, and funniest cats i ve met over the years, and one hell of a DJ and producer. He s been doing his thing for years, both as a solo producer through his Unirhythm imprint, as well as being a part of Detroits Three Chairs project, alongside Theo, Kenny and Rick. I m super happy to have him over for the residency and i m sure its gonna be a special night with him on the 1210s.

Bradley Zero will be in charge of room 2. He has quickly gained momentum as the head behind Rhythm Section , as well as doing a great show on NTS Radio. As a DJ, Bradley to me is one of the tastiest modern house jocks around, playing a lot of current stuff i ve never heard of.. so you ll see me asking for track IDs for a change ;)

Motor City Drum Ensemble This friday will be the opening party of my XOYO residency. I ll be playing alongside Dego & Patrice Scott.

I cannot overstate how much of an influence Dego was and still is for me. I ve been buying every record with this guys name on it since back in the broken beat days.. 4Hero, Co-Op and the whole West London Scene were (together with the House sound of Detroit, Chicago and New York) what got me into electronic music.
He is one of those rare guys that can do the most sophisticated modern fusion-jazz record one day, and then release a grimy, lo-fi, completely nuts record the week after. He is partly responsible for the creation of multiple genres: Jungle, Drum & Bass, Broken Beat, Garage, Dubstep.. and Londons own take on House and Disco.
I cannot wait to see what he will do on Friday!

My second guest is somebody i m very grateful to call a friend for quite some time now - Detroit’s Patrice Scott. There are very few Djs i ve heard that come close to Patrices skills on the 1210s. The word ‚deep’ has been thrown around a lot these last years, but i can’t think of anyone it would suit more than Patrice - His transitions, his pacing, his choice of records - Thats what Deep was meant to be in the first place. Advance tickets are sold out but there will be more on the door from 9:30pm. See you real soon!
